Heritage Goes Missing
Mearns Council Conservative candidate George
Carr has been approached by residents of Inverbervie
relating to files and other artefacts which have been
removed from The Burgh Chambers.
George commented “this all started several
weeks ago when a former secretary of the Community Council
was concerned that historic minutes from the Community
Council had disappeared, and which contained correspondence
relating to decisions and views expressed by the Burgh on
all sorts of matters. I gather that Aberdeenshire Council
was responsible for these items being removed when they were
creating a facility for youngsters in a room within the
Burgh Chambers. These items have been recently traced to
Mintlaw I believe, and hopefully they will be returned as
soon as possible, but I am most concerned that this sort of
thing can have happened in the first place.
As a Community Council Secretary myself, I
would be horrified if such a thing were to happen in my own
area. It’s difficult enough getting people to volunteer for
these roles as it is, and we must ensure that they are
supported, respected and consulted on matters pertaining to
their community especially where Aberdeenshire Council is
concerned.
The Royal Burgh
has a very interesting history and are rightly proud of
their heritage which should be being added to and preserved
rather than the other way about.
I have written to
Area Manager William Munroe, to express my concern about
this matter and to ensure that measures are put in place to
ensure that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again”.
