Mearns Election
Conservative Councillor George Carr, who was
successfully elected to Aberdeenshire Council Mearns Ward on
May 3rd, has expressed his delight at becoming a Councillor.
He said he was the first Conservative to be elected to serve
the Mearns since the late Alastair Henry who represented the
area on Grampian Regional council over ten years ago.
George said that progress on the
Laurencekirk / Marykirk junction will have to be a top
priority for all Cllrs elected to The Mearns, despite it
being a matter reserved to the Scottish Parliament.
“During the election campaign, I was amazed
at the number of people in our community I spoke to who have
lost close family members, or have horrific experiences to
tell when negotiating the junction. I will work with anyone
to speed up a resolution to this junction, but I know people
are very disappointed that the last Lib Dem team of Cllrs,
MSP, MP and Lib Dem Transport Minister failed to deliver. We
must keep up the pressure on the new Scottish Executive to
see this junction upgraded.
Mearns Academy is also in desperate need of
attention. Serious problems exist with the school and we are
faced with a building which is no longer fit for purpose. My
concern is that the old building has fallen into such an
unacceptable state in the first place and will need
significant money to be spent on it before we can get a new
building underway.
The waste management continues to exercise
residents. Far too many car journeys are taking place to
dispose of all sorts of waste and constituents are
complaining about the associated health issues of
transporting such materials in cars. Elderly folks are not
coping in too many cases and I am sceptical that the current
service is doing very much for the environment which should
concern us all. I feel Aberdeenshire Council must provide a
good service to residents and make it as easy as possible to
recycle.”
