Back to School for Councillors
Mearns Councillors George Carr and Jean Dick
paid a visit to Mearns Academy recently to see around the
school, and meet some of the staff and pupils. They were
welcomed and shown around by Rector, Gordon Miller.
As both Councillors were elected for the
first time on May 3rd, they took the opportunity to see at
first hand, difficulties associated with the building which
has been described by Bruce Robertson, the new Director of
Education for Aberdeenshire, as being in his 5 year plan for
replacement.
Cllr Carr said
that almost every department within the school had problems
associated with insufficient space, or simply using
fixtures and fittings which were well past their sell by
date.
“The one thing
however, which struck us both as we talked to staff and
pupils was that despite the deficiencies of the building,
Mearns is a very happy school with a fantastic atmosphere. I
saw next to no vandalism and got the impression that all
concerned with Mearns Academy are extremely proud of their
school.
Both Cllr Dick
and myself have joined the Aberdeenshire Council Education,
Learning and Leisure Committee, and hope to use this
platform to raise awareness, and campaign for the school.
One thing we must ensure is that a new Mearns Academy
becomes a Community School which will enable us to
incorporate some much needed leisure facilities which can be
used by young and old.”
Cllr Dick has
written to Maureen Watt MSP, the new Minister for Schools
and Skills and hopes that resources can be secured from the
new administration in Edinburgh..
