Memorial Park Discussed
Mearns
Councillors George Carr and Jean Dick brought up the subject
of the Memorial Park with Area Manager Willie Munroe at
their recent meeting of Mearns Ward Councillors.
Following
approaches to the Councillors from Laurencekirk Mums,
Jennifer Pearson and Amy Stuart about the state of the
Memorial Park, and the play equipment in particular, the
future of the park was considered. It was suggested by other
users that there would be merit in forming a "Friends of
the Memorial Park" group to plan future investment in the
park, and make sure that the decisions taken by the Council
are the ones local people would like to see.
Cllr Carr was
unhappy with the state of the shelter/toilet block. It was
in a derelict condition and a bad advertisement to locals
and visitors wanting to use the park which the Cllrs felt
was a great asset to Laurencekirk. Mr Munroe was of the
opinion that demolition might have to be considered as it
was unusable now as a public toilet, although it was noted
that it had been used to plumb in portable toilet facilities
during the recent Gala. Following a recent report on
Aberdeenshire Council public toilet provision, by the
Council Scrutiny and Audit Committee, it was reluctantly
agreed that there was little chance of seeing a new facility
being provided at the Memorial Park by the Council.
The Councillors
would like the views of locals and Mearns Community Council
before advocating a way forwards.
