Alex Johnstone elected Vice Chairman of the Scottish
Countryside Alliance Educational Trust
North
East MSP Alex Johnstone has been elected Vice Chairman of
the Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational Trust at its
Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh last Friday.
SCEAT was
set up as a Scottish charity in 2003 by the Scottish
Countryside Alliance in response to the very obvious need to
reconnect the people of Scotland with its countryside,
realising the need to increase knowledge, awareness and
appreciation of the countryside with a largely urban
Scottish population.
The trust
is responsible for promoting high profile vents such as
'Scottish Food Fortnight' and 'Scotlands Countryside
Festival' which now takes place annually at Glamis castle
during September.
The trust
also promotes 'next generation country days' which encourage
young people to take an interest in rural activities, one of
which was held at Crathes Castle earlier this year and
other opportunities for young people, particularly from
difficult backgrounds, to experience angling and other field
sports. The trust also supports vocational training
initiatives for young people who want to peruse careers as
gamekeepers or to fulfil other roles in the rural economy.
Alex
Johnstone became a trustee of SCEAT in 2005
and his appointment as Vice Chairman coincides with a
transitional period when the trust will become a 'company
limited by guarantee' and formally break its links with its
parent body, The Scottish Countryside Alliance.
