Politicians Support Farmers
Market
North
East
based MSP Alex Johnstone and local Councillor George Carr
were among the crowds who flocked to the last farmers
market of the year to be held in the Market Square, at the
weekend. The market provided a wonderful opportunity to
stock up on high quality local produce in advance of
Christmas.
Although stall numbers were slightly less
than normal, the mainstays of the market were present, beef
from The Store, pork from Ingrams, dairy products from the
Devnick Dairy and vegetables from Burnorachie and Fernieflat
as well as a range of other tempting produce for sale.
Speaking at the event, Alex Johnstone MSP,
said "I never fail to be delighted by the quality of the
produce at this market and never miss an opportunity to buy
locally. Not only is it produced to the highest possible
standards by traditional methods but, being produced
locally, it has not been transported hundreds of miles by
lorry before it reaches the stalls. Anyone who is genuinely
concerned for their health and the environment should be
using farmers markets at every possible opportunity"
Councillor George Carr added, "The farmers
market movement is growing from small beginnings but is
offering an alternative marketing strategy for smaller local
food producers who have seen their returns diminish over the
years. By selling directly they are securing a fairer price
for their produce and giving hope to the next generation of
small farmers"
