Let's Welcome For Armed Forces Day says MSP
North East Tory
MSP Alex Johnstone has welcomed proposals for a national day
to honour Britain’s service men and women.
If introduced,
the event would bring the UK into line with other countries
which already have the event, including China, Iran, Canada
and Australia.
Commenting, Mr
Johnstone said “Men and women from across Aberdeenshire
continue to serve with great distinction in many parts of
the world, and a day in which we recognise their efforts,
appreciate the work they do and raise awareness of the tasks
they complete in often hostile conditions, would certainly
be a welcome addition to the calendar.”
“We should not
forget that our armed forces are drawn from the very
communities in which we live and we should not hesitate to
show our gratitude and admiration for the work they do.”
Concluding, Mr
Johnstone said “Whilst I welcome the proposal in principal,
such a celebration should in no way be seen as compensating
for the kind of under-investment in our forces that we have
seen for too many years now.”
