Tory MSP Alex Johnstone Is Urging People To Make The
Most Of Scotland's Produce
Mr Johnstone, himself a farmer said "We are
becoming increasingly aware of the amount of high quality
food and drink available in Scotland, and I believe we
should make a conscious decision to actively source
in-season Scottish produce, not just meat and veg, but also
items such as the award winning fruit that is grown in the
North East."
"By doing this, we will be supporting
Scottish food producers and reducing the distance from farm
gate to your plate which will also help the environment."
"I would also encourage Aberdeenshire hotels
and cafes to use more Scottish produce, and proudly
advertise that fact on their menu's, especially as recent
research shows that the vast majority of visitors to the
area eat out whilst they are here."
"When we talk about using locally grown,
seasonal produce, many people resist the idea of a winter
eating seasonal vegetables, but in the summertime, we have a
range of soft fruit and salad vegetables which are second to
none, and why not preserve our soft fruit for the winter by
reviving jam making skills?"
Mr Johnstone, who hosted the first ever
farmers market in the Scottish Parliament, continued "I
believe we should also do more to maximise the amount of
local produce used in school meals, and also take the
opportunity to educate our children about the benefits of
fresh produce."
Concluding, Mr Johnstone said "Scotland's
reputation as a producer of exciting and tasty produce is
not only very much deserved, it is growing all the time, and
I would like to encourage people to play an increasing role
in that."
