MSP Visits SSPCA
North
east MSP Alex Johnstone has used a visit to the SSPCA's base
at Peterden on the outskirts of Dundee to welcome the news
that the organisation has submitted a planning application
for a new animal rescue and rehoming centre at Drumoak.
Should the application be successful, it is
hoped the centre would be open early next year and provide
spaces for approximately 20 dogs, 20 cats, six horses and
facilities to care for small animals.
Area Manager Sharon Comrie said "Aberdeen
and Aberdeenshire is a really big area and we have never had
a centre in the Aberdeen area. It would be great if the
plans were approved. Being able to build a centre at Drumoak
would allow us to make even better use of the donations we
receive and give the people of the North East the animal
rescue and rehoming centre they deserve."
The SSPCA has centres in Glasgow, the
Borders, Inverness and Fife, and by Edinburgh, Dundee and
Thurso, but as yet do not have a centre in the North East.
This means that animals rescued in the area have to go to
other organisations locally or be transported to one of the
SSPCA's other centres.
Commenting after the visit, Alex Johnstone
said "I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the
SSPCA centre and see the important work they do. It can
be heartbreaking to hear the stories of abuse and neglect
that some of the animals had suffered and there is no doubt
that with a new facility at Drumoak, they could achieve much
more."
"With the worsening economic conditions,
there are fears that more people could neglect or dump their
pet and this will make the work of the SSPCA even more
invaluable. I would urge anyone who can no longer care for
their pet to get in touch with SSPCA and seek to have it
rehomed properly. Likewise, if you are thinking of bringing
a pet into the family, please think about giving a second
chance to one of the wonderful animals that the SSPCA is
currently caring for."
