People Need To Know Policy On Gritting Says MSP
Tory MSP Alex Johnstone is calling on
Aberdeenshire council to make clear its gritting policy
following the sudden cold snap experienced throughout
Scotland but which hit Deeside particularly hard.
Mr Johnstone said "I have been contacted by
several constituents who are concerned at the level of
gritting carried out by the council over the past couple of
weeks."
"One constituent, commenting on the shortage
of salt reported by the national media suggested that it
wouldn't be a problem in Aberdeenshire given that so little
appeared to be used in the first place!"
"Obviously, all local authorities have
a gritting procedure in place which dictates what the
priority gritting areas are, and I think Aberdeenshire
Council should publicly state what these priorities are so
that the public can know what to expect and plan their
routes accordingly."
"Clearly, Deeside presents considerable
challenges when gritting is needed, but a bit more
information from the council on when and where roads and
pavements are expected to be salted, would be real
assistance to people."
Mr Johnstone concluded "Given that
settlements in the area continue to grow, perhaps now would
be a good time to re-evaluate the gritting programme to
allow for the increased populations in the Deeside
villages."
