Johnstone Welcomes Funding News
North East MSP, Alex Johnstone, has welcomed the
announcement by the Scottish Government that it will finance
two thirds of the cost of a replacement Mearns Academy, with
the local authority covering the remainder of the cost.
The announcement comes only ten days after
the local Conservative candidate raised the matter in the
Scottish Parliament, questioning Junior Education Minister,
Keith Brown MSP, on the subject on 17 September.
Speaking after the announcement, the
Conservative MSP said: “I am disappointed that the Minister
did not take the opportunity of my question to make his
announcement two weeks ago but it has become standard
practice for this Government to make these announcements to
the press rather than to Parliament.
“Nonetheless, I am delighted to have been
part of a campaign which has lead to the provision of a
replacement building for Mearns Academy.
“It has been obvious to any impartial
observer that this school has been starved of investment for
years and I congratulate the SNP Government for recognising
this and delivering the required funding to the school which
should have always been the number one priority.
“This same Government must now face up to
the further demands for sub standard buildings at other
schools across the county to be upgraded and this will
require them to address their funding mechanisms in order to
deliver the much needed improvements.”
