MSP Presses for Kemnay School Funding

After first raising the funding needs of Kemnay Academy with Education Ministers in September, Alex Johnstone MSP has once again pressed Education Minister Fiona Hyslop to act. Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, the MSP thanked her for her commitment to provide funds for the rebuilding of secondary schools at both Ellon and Laurencekirk but pointed out that, “ The historical burden of school building in Aberdeenshire is so large that the situation of Kemnay academy has not yet been addressed. Is there any prospect of the Government providing guidance on how the funding for replacing Kemnay academy may be obtained?”

Fiona Hyslop replied that, “Local authorities continue to receive robust levels of capital investment. Between 2008 and 2010, £2 billion will be provided. The member is right to identify the problem of the historical backlog that exists in Aberdeenshire. Indeed, Aberdeenshire Council was the only local authority that benefited from two schools in last week's announcement.”

Speaking after the exchange, Alex Johnstone said, “The past failure of both local and national government to resolve Aberdeenshire’s school building backlog means that Kemnay has had to take it’s place in a long queue. Recent developments seem to have passed Kemnay by, but the school must now be the number one priority when funding next becomes available.”

“I will continue to press the Scottish Government to come up with more imaginative solutions which will allow the funding to be made available sooner rather than later.”
